Students analyze the role religion played in the founding of America, its lasting moral, social, and political impacts, and issues regarding religious liberty.
Why should students study the role religion played in the founding of America? The article by Peter Stearns makes two excellent points as to why students should study the history of religion in America. The first is how history helps us understand change and how the society we live in came to be. To understand constitutional heritage, civic rights and responsibilities, and moral and legal values students must have a firm understanding of the religious values and movements that have contributed to this historical identity. The second reason students should understand the role of religion in the
founding of America is the fact that this understanding contributes to moral understanding. American religious principles and values form the foundation for much of American morality and law. To comprehend the moral history and positions of the American Republic, students must first understand the religious movements and values that helped shape this history.
Although I cannot say that my perspective has changed after prepping the lesson I would add a few things to my response. Through preparing the lesson, I realize the importance of understanding religious change and pluralism in a free society. The student needs to focus equally on the religious foundations that formed this Republic and the struggles to ensure religious freedom and expression over the centuries of its existence. To ensure that future generations are well-informed members of a free and pluralistic society.
