Goals & Objectives
The Students will understand the principles of religious liberty established in the founding documents of the United States. The students will comprehend and learn about the concepts of religious freedom in the first amendment and the Virginia statute for religious freedom by analyzing and answering the DBQ questions and exploring the main ideas found in the text.

Lesson Introduction
The students will watch the Stand up for religious freedom you tube video to key prior knowledge and engage the students in the course material. After the video, the teacher will lead a short discussion on the first amendment religious rights and the varying ways the American people interpret them. The students will engage the content by examining the video and applying issues of religious freedom in the bill of rights to issues and debates in present day society.
Vocabulary
The students will address the vocabulary during the DBQ activity. The students will analyze the text picking out the vocabulary as they read the primary document to assess the major concepts and ideas. The teacher will move about the room to assist the students if the vocabulary or content proves difficult to analyze.

Content Delivery
The lesson will focus on the three primary documents and the DBQ questions. The teacher will read the primary documents and the questions aloud to the class. The teacher will then direct the students to begin analyzing the documents and the DBQ questions. The students will work silently and alone during the activity. The teacher will move around the room monitoring progress and asking or answering questions to check for comprehension.
Student Engagement
The students will engage the lesson content in two ways, the DBQ questions and the summary essay. The students will analyze the documents in three different ways.
The students will analyze the vocabulary as they attempt to infer the meaning of the text. The students will also engage the text breaking down small sections and ideas within the text and analyzing them for both the individual meaning and the broader meaning of the primary document as a whole. During the lesson closure, the teacher will assign students a short essay analyzing the meaning of the three documents and evaluating the ideas and attitudes toward religious freedom and the first amendment.

Assessment
Formative- The teacher will check for understanding during the lesson by moving around the room asking and answering questions.
Summative- The teacher will assess student comprehension by grading the DBQ questions and summary essay.

Lesson Closure
The teacher will recap the important ideas and concepts from the primary source documents. The teacher will call upon students to explain their answers to the DBQ questions and justify their analysis. The teacher will then assign a two or three paragraph summary essay for students to take as homework and turn in the following lesson.
Accommodations for English Learners, Struggling Readers and Students with Special Needs
The teacher will support comprehension for Students with special needs and striving readers by providing additional assistance and modified DBQ questions. The teacher will modify the DBQ questions with partial answer prompts after the question and pictures to activate students’ knowledge. The teacher will provide English Learners additional assistance, the
teacher will provide questions in the native language as well as English if possible.
